Sky in the Deep

Author: Adrienne Young

Genre: Fantasy

Rating: 4/5

I was given a free e-copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Synopsis (Goodreads)

OND ELDR. BREATHE FIRE.

Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield—her brother, fighting with the enemy—the brother she watched die five years ago.

Faced with her brother's betrayal, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki, in a village where every neighbor is an enemy, every battle scar possibly one she delivered. But when the Riki village is raided by a ruthless clan thought to be a legend, Eelyn is even more desperate to get back to her beloved family.

She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend, who sees her as a threat. They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one. Driven by a love for her clan and her growing love for Fiske, Eelyn must confront her own definition of loyalty and family while daring to put her faith in the people she’s spent her life hating.

My Thoughts

The very first thing that struck me about this book was how graphic some explanations about wounds/battles were. However, I do have a very weak stomach and find a lot of things gross so most likely almost everyone else will be okay with these descriptions.

I absolutely love the main character Eelyn! She is such a brave, courageous and fierce warrior and her stubbornness and openness allowed for such a wonderful development and story around her! I also adored Halvard, another character within the book. He was so adorable, and funny, and didn't take into account any differences between him and anyone else when deciding to be friendly. To be fair I could go on and on about these characters and how much I adored them, but I wouldn't be able to do that without giving away some major spoilers, so let's just say they are all great.

This story also has an element of mythology which made for a great back story development when reading about the history of the rivalry between the Riki and Aska. I really enjoyed seeing how sometimes, you may be born into one belief but that doesn't mean that it has to be yours.

Sometimes I did get bored and skimmed over a few parts that didn't seem important. I also found myself itching for more interactions between Eelyn and her love interest. They were perfect for each other! I really hope that there is another book and that we get to see more of them together!

Lastly, can we just appreciate the cover for a moment? I think it is so beautiful and captivating! Like the look on the girls face just makes you want to dive in!

I am so excited to purchase a physical copy of this book, because I really enjoyed it but I really don't enjoy reading anything in e-book format and I would like to reread this.

Sky in the Deep will be released on April 24, 2018, and I definitely recommend it to all of you!
